Is it time for juried art shows?

Did you know that the juried show dates as far back as the Middle Ages? In 1441, a juried competition called the Certame Coronario was held to bring out the best Italian poets possible. It wasn't long before other art communities followed and the juried art show was born.
Why is it so important to have juried art shows today? Our local art communities are flooded with art shows. This not only waters down art in our community, but with so many shows going on people don't know which way to turn. We, as the art community have the responsibility to offer the buying public the best art show possible.
With the juried process in place art patrons can go to the exhibits expecting to see the most amazing artwork submitted and know it has passed through the eye of the expert thus giving it a valuable credential for the purchaser.
The juried process is a necessary career step if an artist wants to be considered a serious artist. Artists may find it necessary to enter juried art competitions on a regular basis in order to help build and develop their artistic resume. Why you ask? The answer is incredibly simple; it is an amazing third party endorsement that speaks volumes about your skill and artistic talents.

I feel currently there is not enough juried art shows in the art community to satisfy the hunger of the true art collector as well as the truly passionate artist. Most artists want to strive for the top tier and are willing to compete to secure their spot in a show for the elite collectors and art appreciators.
Dreams a Juried Art Exhibit's Curator, Velva Lee Heraty, aka Dream Momma, discussed the importance of the juried process with me in a recent conversation. Dreams a Juried Art Exhibit is Heraty's fifth local art exhibit in St. Petersburg.
“I've been a collector all my life. I purchased a small oil, the study of two apples, at the age of 14. As I matured into a serious collector I began to trust my judgment when it came to adding to my collection. That took years and most people haven't the time for that." Heraty said. "In addition I felt the St. Pete Art Community was ready to step up its game. With regular monthly art walks, multiple shows every weekend, and competing art communities it's gotten to be way too much. In addition there are fine local artists that are ready for the next skill level but aren't being pushed. Personally, I can't wait to see what some of those deeper hidden talents can produce under fire."

Tiltle: energy by Brandon Scott
Tiltle: energy by Brandon Scott

Brandon Scott captures the inward journey through bold, colorful expression, whether figuratively or abstractly. His style involves painting “from the inside out”, allowing the image to unfold organically, layer upon layer. The artist’s intention is to uplift and inspire the viewer with images that feed the heart and soul. Brandon Scott is a self-taught artist that paints from strong emotions. Brandon’s media of choice is sporadic, however, he tends to lean towards acrylics and watercolors. When Brandon is painting, he has to be inspired in a way that he can paint from his subconscious point of view.
Brandon Scott was born in Long Island, New York and is of Lithuanian descent. Growing up in a large city inspired him in his use of colors. This defines his vivid dream like style. Brandon fell in love with the community driven art scene of NYC. He later relocated to the amazing art community of Bradenton, Fl. in 1987. He started a career in steel erection to pay his bills. As he soon found out, this would not be his true calling in life. Brandon started his career in art much later in his life, not going public until 2010. In order to get himself out there, he displayed at as many Florida art walks and tent shows as possible. Soon after his first season, his work was starting to catch on and several galleries would start to display his work. Brandon has a strong social media presence that not only gets him out to local markets, but to international markets as well. He covers all aspects of social media, which recently led to having three of his paintings being published in a coffee table book for the “Art for Good Foundation” By Hollywood’s philanthropist Wendie Busig-kohn. Brandon is also a writer and blogger. The Da Vinci Machines Exhibition in Bradenton ...WHAT !

The Da Vinci Machines Exhibition
Bradenton is becoming an all-inclusive go to arts destination, a real front-runner.   Coming In November 2013, an exhibit representing the work of one of the world’s greatest artists of all time is coming to Bradenton.
The Leonardo da Vinci Machines exhibit will be hosted by the Bradenton Auditorium for six months. Inventions such as a helicopter, catapult and bicycle will be featured. This amazing exhibit will bring in droves of people from the greater Tampa bay region and beyond.
The exhibit consists of over 60 machines recreated by Italian artisans using da Vinci’s drawings and designs as well as employing the same materials available in Leonardo’s time. The machines are divided into four galleries :Transportation, Military, Mechanical and Entertainment devices. Each device has a detailed description that explains its function and unique characteristics. Some of the machines are interactive, allowing students to operate the machine to see how they were intended to work.
Leonardo Da Vinci is one of the most intriguing men in history – an ordinary person who did extraordinary things. He was an accomplished  artist, designer, engineer, philosopher and scientist. In short, Leonardo da Vinci was the very embodiment of what we now think of as a Renaissance man.

  • When    Nov. 1st to the end of April
  • Where    The Bradenton Auditorium.  1005  First Ave. W   Bradenton, Florida

What good does buying locally do?

What good does buying locally do?

  • It stimulates the local economy. A  2002 study done in Florida showed that for every $100 that was spent in a chain bookstore, only $13 of it was put back into the local economy. But that same $100 spent at a local, independently owned bookstore put $45 back into the local economy. Think of that next time you're deciding to get your coffee from a large chain or the local corner coffee house like Latte Luna.
  • It helps locals keep their jobs. Most people who work in local businesses live locally. By buying from these places like The Chop Shop and The Treasure Chest . You help your neighbors keep their jobs and that benefits your whole community.
  • Local businesses give back locally. Do you know who sponsors the little league and softball teams in your town? I do. The local corner coffee house, the corner bar, the independent ice cream parlor (is it beginning to sound like I live in Mayberry? It's not a bad comparison). I also know who donates gift certificates and baskets when the PTA is holding an auction or someone is holding a beef and beer night to raise money for a local cancer patient. It's the same businesses that sponsor's your kid's sports teams. By supporting these businesses, I help ensure that they can support the community.
  • It's good for the environment. Less auto emissions occur when you're going only a few blocks (you could even walk or ride your bike) for what you need vs. traveling miles away to a big box store. If enough people buy locally, it could actually prevent a big box store — which usually devours open space and requires new roads to be built — from infiltrating your community. If you're buying locally grown food, it’s really good for the environment because you're helping the small farmers keep their farms operational instead of shutting down and selling to developers.
  • It promotes a sense of community. If you want to get to know your neighbors and others in your community, supporting the local businesses is a great way to do that after all Bradenton is in the running for the friendliest city in america so say hello and meet some new people.

When I look at all the information I just cant understand why you would do anything else. support you local businesses and grow your town with pride and a sense of accomplishment
