Did you know that the juried show dates as far back as the Middle Ages? In 1441, a juried competition called the Certame Coronario was held to bring out the best Italian poets possible. It wasn't long before other art communities followed and the juried art show was born.
Why is it so important to have juried art shows today? Our local art communities are flooded with art shows. This not only waters down art in our community, but with so many shows going on people don't know which way to turn. We, as the art community have the responsibility to offer the buying public the best art show possible.
With the juried process in place art patrons can go to the exhibits expecting to see the most amazing artwork submitted and know it has passed through the eye of the expert thus giving it a valuable credential for the purchaser.
The juried process is a necessary career step if an artist wants to be considered a serious artist. Artists may find it necessary to enter juried art competitions on a regular basis in order to help build and develop their artistic resume. Why you ask? The answer is incredibly simple; it is an amazing third party endorsement that speaks volumes about your skill and artistic talents.

I feel currently there is not enough juried art shows in the art community to satisfy the hunger of the true art collector as well as the truly passionate artist. Most artists want to strive for the top tier and are willing to compete to secure their spot in a show for the elite collectors and art appreciators.
Dreams a Juried Art Exhibit's Curator, Velva Lee Heraty, aka Dream Momma, discussed the importance of the juried process with me in a recent conversation. Dreams a Juried Art Exhibit is Heraty's fifth local art exhibit in St. Petersburg.
“I've been a collector all my life. I purchased a small oil, the study of two apples, at the age of 14. As I matured into a serious collector I began to trust my judgment when it came to adding to my collection. That took years and most people haven't the time for that." Heraty said. "In addition I felt the St. Pete Art Community was ready to step up its game. With regular monthly art walks, multiple shows every weekend, and competing art communities it's gotten to be way too much. In addition there are fine local artists that are ready for the next skill level but aren't being pushed. Personally, I can't wait to see what some of those deeper hidden talents can produce under fire."
